Bratislava airport writes successful chapters of its history

The story of the M. R. Štefánik airport in Bratislava started to be written in 1947. Its latest chapters capture significant successes and more than 1,5 million passengers every year. Bratislava Airport M.R.Štefánika

Nearly 70 years have lapsed since the construction of 04 - 22 and 13 - 31 runways started at Bratislava airport. These decades could be characterized as a constant movement – not only in the air but also on the ground. The airport that lies only 9 kilometres north-east from the centre of Bratislava is constantly reacting to the increasing demands, technological progress as well as to the changes of the political climate.

The first phases

Regular flights from Bratislava airport started in 1951. The departure terminal with the new communication system was built in the next construction phase, further the passenger handling area was extended and the premises were created for Flying service of the Ministry of Interior. The complex reconstruction of the runway system executed in the 1980s brought, except others, significant extension of the runways. The arrival terminal was finished in the 1990s, later the fire station was built, the new control tower started its operation, the fuel warehouses were extended and the lighting and security system of the 13 – 31 take-off-landing strip was reconstructed. The airport was moved from category 6 to category 7 what made it possible to open also to large aircrafts.

New millennium

The beginning of the new millennium brought new breath to the largest airport in Slovakia that was related not only to the transformation of the Slovak Airport Administration to Letisko M. R. Štefánika – Airport Bratislava (BTS) joint-stock company but also to the preparation of Slovakia for joining the Schengen area. After the phytosanitary control centre was built to check the animate and inanimate goods passing through the airport, further investments followed in the field of additional services improvement and separation of the crew security check from the passengers check as well as the extension of the C terminal for the passengers from the Schengen countries. Joining the common European area by the airport has required further changes of the security check, moving the passport counters, dividing the departure terminal to two parts, building the departure bridges and other measures that were successfully finalized in 2008.

New terminal

Construction of the new terminal became the next challenge for Bratislava airport. The most significant project of civil aviation in the past few decades was realized between 2009 and 2012 under full operation of the airport and it consisted of not only the construction of the new departure terminal but also of a gradual demolition of the original terminal as well as construction of the second part of the new check-in hall in its place. At the beginning of 2016 the management of the Letisko M.R.Štefánika airport decided to rebuild the B terminal with the aim to use it for VIP flights during the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2016.

Rise and awards

Along with the construction of new premises and constant increase of the service level the management of Bratislava airport was able to improve the economy of the airport. The cumulated loss of the company decreased by 50% between 2012 and 2014 and one of the most important economic indicators EBITDA increased by 46% in 2014 compared to the previous year. After having met the 1 500 criteria and 5 basic conditions the airport received the Solvency Certificate awarded by Bisnode Slovensko in 2015. At that time the certificate was issued only to 7,8% of the Slovak companies. The rise of the Letisko M.R. Štefánika airport is proven also with its successes in the Skytrax – The World Airport Awards that is the world´s largest Airline Customer Satisfaction Survey. Bratislava airport is the seventh best airport in Eastern Europe based on the latest results of the survey.

Continuous growth of the number of passengers

Introduction of the new airport management in 2013, the related consolidation of the financial resources, restructuring of the airport company itself and implementation of the set network of airlinks model stand behind the awards mentioned above. All this is mirrored in the constant increase of the number of passengers. In 2015 Bratislava airport handled more than 1,5 million passengers what is 15,4% more than in 2014. And between January and May 2016 the airport recorded 31% more passengers compared to the same period of the previous year. The M.R. Štefánik airport offers 30 regular destinations in 15 countries and dozens of holiday resorts within the summer scheduling period. We experience an increase in the number of passengers also thanks to increasing demand for our transport services. Architectonic jewel

Even though the reputation of Vienna airport terminals is not as reputation of the most beautiful buildings would be, the airport control tower that was opened in 2006 received a great number of various architectonic prizes. With its height of 109 metres it is the tallest building of its kind in Europe and it offers a view to the whole area of the airport. As of the 1st of July 2016 it will be possible to observe from it regularly the landing manoeuvre of the giant Airbus A 380 of Emirates.

New terminal

After various complications caused by rather high costs Terminal 3 was opened in 2012. Thanks to this event the annual capacity of the airport increased to 30 million passengers. You will find impressive numbers also among the data concerning the area of the office premises for rent. Currently a total of 60 thousand square meters are available.

Architektur

Architektonický skvost

Hoci terminály viedenského letiska nemajú povesť najkrajších stavieb, letisková riadiaca veža otvorená v roku 2006 získala viaceré architektonické ocenenia. S výškou 109 metrov je najvyššou stavbou svojho druhu v Európe a ponúka výhľad na celý priestor letiska. Od prvého júla 2016 z nej bude pravidelne vidno pristávací manéver obrieho Airbusu A 380 leteckej spoločnosti Emirates.

Nový terminál

Po rôznych komplikáciách spôsobených príliš vysokými nákladmi sa v roku 2012 podarilo otvoriť Terminál 3, ktorý ročnú kapacitu letiska zvýšil na 30 miliónov cestujúcich. Impozantné čísla nájdete aj v údajoch o rozlohe kancelárskych priestorov určených na prenájom. Celkovo je momentálne k dispozícii až 60-tisíc metrov štvorcových.

Bratislavské letisko

Od začiatku výstavby pristávacích dráh 04 - 22 a 13 - 31 bratislavského letiska uplynulo takmer 70 rokov. Tie desaťročia by sa dali charakterizovať ako neustály pohyb - nielen vo vzduchu, ale aj na zemi. Letisko vzdialené len 9 kilometrov severovýchodne od centra Bratislavy neustále reaguje na stúpajúce nároky, technologický pokrok aj zmeny politickej klímy.

Prvé etapy

Pravidelne sa z bratislavského letiska začalo lietať v roku 1951. V nasledujúcej fáze výstavby pribudol odletový terminál s novým komunikačným systémom, rozšírila sa vybavovacia plocha a vznikli aj priestory určené pre Letku ministerstva vnútra. Komplexná rekonštrukcia dráhového systému v 80. rokoch minulého storočia priniesla okrem iného výrazné predĺženie pristávacích dráh. V 90. rokoch sa podarilo dokončiť terminál pre prílety, vybudovať požiarnu zbrojnicu, uviesť do prevádzky novú riadiacu vežu, rozšíriť sklady pohonných hmôt či rekonštruovať svetelný a zabezpečovací systém vzletovo-pristávacej dráhy 13 -31. Letisko prešlo z kategórie 6 do kategórie 7, čím sa otvorilo aj veľkokapacitným lietadlám.

Nové milénium

Začiatok nového tisícročia priniesol najväčšiemu letisku na Slovensku nový dych súvisiaci nielen s transformáciou Slovenskej správy letísk na akciovú spoločnosť Letisko M. R. Štefánika – Airport Bratislava (BTS), ale aj s prípravami Slovenska na vstup do schengenského priestoru. Po výstavbe fytosanitárneho centra na kontrolu živého aj neživého tovaru prechádzajúceho letiskom nasledovali investície do ďalšieho skvalitňovania služieb a oddelenia bezpečnostnej kontroly posádok lietadiel od kontroly cestujúcich a prístavby terminálu C pre pasažierov z krajín Schengenu. Vstup letiska do spoločného európskeho priestoru si vyžiadal ďalšie zmeny bezpečnostnej kontroly, presun pasových pultov, rozdelenie odletového terminálu na dve časti, výstavbu odletových mostov a ďalšie opatrenia úspešne zavŕšené v roku 2008.

Nový terminál

Ďalšou výzvou pre bratislavské letisko sa stala výstavba nového terminálu. Realizácia najvýznamnejšieho projektu civilného letectva za ostatné desaťročia prebiehala od roku 2009 do roku 2012 za plnej prevádzky letiska a zahŕňala nielen stavbu nového odletového terminálu, ale aj postupnú demoláciu toho pôvodného a tiež vybudovanie druhej časti novej vybavovacej budovy na jeho mieste. Začiatkom roka 2016 sa vedenie Letiska M.R. Štefánika rozhodlo zrekonštruovať terminál B s cieľom využívať ho pre lety VIP v rámci predsedníctva Slovenska v Rade Európskej únie v druhom polroku 2016. 

Vzostup a ocenenia

Popri budovaní nových priestorov a neustálom zvyšovaní úrovne služieb sa vedeniu bratislavského letiska darilo hospodáriť čoraz úspornejšie. V rokoch 2012-2014 sa kumulovaná strata spoločnosti znížila o 50% a jeden z najdôležitejších ukazovateľov hospodárenia EBITDA vzrástol v roku 2014 v porovnaní s tým predchádzajúcim o 46%. V roku 2015 získalo letisko Certifikát solventnosti, ktorý udeľuje firma Bisnode Slovensko na základe splnenia 1 500 kritérií a 5 základných podmienok. Certifikát vlastnilo v tom čase len 7,8% slovenských firiem. Vzostup Letiska M.R. Štefánika dokumentujú aj jeho úspechy v celosvetovom rebríčku letísk Skytrax – The World Airport Awards, ktorý odzrkaľuje prieskum spokojnosti návštevníkov letísk. Na základe najnovších výsledkov ankety je bratislavské letisko siedmym najlepším vo východnej Európe.

Kontinuálny nárast počtu cestujúcich

Za spomínanými oceneniami stojí nástup nového vedenia letiska v roku 2013 a s tým súvisica konsolidácia finančných zdrojov, reštrukturalizácia samotnej letiskovej spoločnosti a realizácia nastaveného modelu rozvoja siete leteckých spojení. To všetko sa odráža v neustálom náraste počtu pasažierov. V roku 2015 vybavilo bratislavské letisko viac ako 1,5 milióna cestujúcich, čo je o 15,4% viac než v roku 2014. A od januára do mája roku 2016 zaznamenalo letisko o 31% cestujúcich viac než v rovnakom období predchádzajúceho roka. V rámci letného letového poriadku ponúka letisko M.R. Štefánika 30 pravidelných destinácií v 15 krajinách a desiatky dovolenkových letovísk. Zvyšovanie počtu pasažierov zaznamenávame aj vďaka stúpajúcemu dopytu po našich dopravných službách. Schönbrunn

Schönbrunn

Das Schloss Schönbrunn ist die meistbesuchte Sehenswürdigkeit in Österreich. Von 1569 bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 stand es im Besitz des Herrscherhauses Habsburg. Das Schloss Schönbrunn ist ein einzigartiges barockes Gesamtkunstwerk mit der umliegenden 1,5 km2 großen Gartenanlage.

ZOO

Der Tiergarten im Park des Schlosses Schönbrunn wurde im Jahr 1752 von den Habsburgern gegründet und ist der älteste noch bestehende Zoo der Welt.

Prater und Riesenrad

Die älteste Erwähnung des Praters findet sich in einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1162. Ursprünglich bezeichnete man als Prater nur eine kleine Insel in der Donau. Heute ist es ein sehr weitläufiges, etwa 6 km2 umfassendes, großteils öffentliches Areal. Der Prater ist jetzt ein beliebtes Ausflugs- und Erholungsgebiet. Hier befindet sich eine sehr große Anzahl von Sportanlagen. Für die Besucher Wiens ist häufig nur der Vergnügungspark - der Wurstelprater bekannt. Das Wiener Riesenrad im Prater wurde im 1897 errichtet und war zur damaligen Zeit eines der größten Riesenräder der Welt. Seit dieser Zeit dreht sich das Riesenrad und bietet einen einmaligen Ausblick auf die Stadt an der Donau.

Stephandsdom

Der Wiener Stephansdom am Stephansplatz ist ein weltberühmtes Bauwerk und gilt als Wahrzeichen Wiens. Das Bauwerk ist 107 Meter lang und 34 Meter breit. Der Dom ist eines der wichtigsten gotischen Bauwerke in Österreich. Im Südturm befinden sich insgesamt 13 Glocken. Die Pummerin ist die zweitgrößte frei schwingend geläutete Kirchenglocke Europas.

Die Albertina ist ein Kunstmuseum mit einer der bedeutendsten grafischen Sammlungen der Welt.

Galerie Belvedere ist ein bedeutendes Kunstmuseum im Schloss Belvedere in Wien. Es beherbergt Kunst mehrerer Epochen vom Mittelalter über das Barock bis ins 21. Jahrhundert.

The oldest ZOO, the most precious graphics collections, one of the largest cultural premises, one of the most beautiful baroque areas, one of the highest churches, the oldest amusement park – all this are superlatives connected with the Viennese attractions at global level. Before starting the presentation of the most important ones let us introduce one more top: Vienna has one of the most sophisticated transport systems in Europe. Schönbrunn

One of the most beautiful baroque premises in Europe attracts the most visitors of Vienna every year. The former summer residence of the Habsburgs where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – as a 6-year-old boy – exhibited his virtuosity has 1441 rooms (45 are open to public). In 1752 the oldest currently still operating ZOO in the world was opened here. Already three panda cubs sired in a natural way in the ZOO were born here and rare animals and runs appear annually, while the historical features of the ZOO remain untouched.

Prater and Riesenrad

Thousands of people stream to the oldest amusement park in the world from March to the end of October – not only because of the 250 attractions but also due to relax on the sports grounds and in the recreational premises of the park with the acreage of 600 hectares. Since 1766, when Joseph II. donated this area to the Viennese people, carousels, mazes, water slides or roller-coasters have appeared in the area including the highest chair-o-plane with its height of 117 metres. Riesenrad – the most popular attraction of the park - has been twisting here since 1897 with the speed of 75 centimetres per second.

Stephandsdom with a view on shopping

There is no postcard of Vienna that wouldn´t contain the picture of this most important gothic building of Austria. 343 stairs (there is also a lift) lead to the beautiful view on the city, however, Stephandsdom (St. Stephen's cathedral) got among the highest cathedrals of the world thanks to its southern tower with its height of more than 136 metres. However, the largest of the 13 bells, the so called Pummerin, hangs in the northern tower and it is the second largest church bell in Europe. The Dome stands on the Stephansplatz square at the meeting point of the two main streets of shopping fans: streets Graben and Kärtner Strasse. 

For the admirers of art

If you travel to Vienna because of art you should really reserve a lot of time. The Albertina Gallery houses one of the most precious graphics collections and it should by far not be your only stop. You definitely should not miss the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Belvedere or Kunsthalle in the MuseumsQuartier that is a city district that belongs among the ten largest cultural areas in the world.

Museums

Out of a large number of museums that are worth visiting we want to mention at least the Josephinum museum of medicine with 200 years old wax models of human organs, Haus der Musik where you shall get acquainted not only with history but also with the future of music, you can compose your own song or you can test the resistance of your ears, the Sisi Museum of Empress Elisabeth in Hofburg the thesaurus of which shelters also the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire from the 10th century or the Natural History Museum the collections of which began to emerge in 1750.

Vienna from perspective

If you like to observe the sights with the addition of adrenaline you should certainly not skip the visit of the Donauturm – the highest Viennese building where you can enjoy the view on the city together with the delicatessen of the local restaurants or in combination with free falling from the height of 152 metres. This is because, in case of favourable weather and in selected times, Donauturm offers also bungee jumping. The nearest time is between the 7th and the 8th of May.

Naming all the interesting places in Vienna is as onerous as selecting the most attractive ones from them. You can admire them during a walk (you can walk across the centre in a few dozens of minutes) or from a cab (fiaker) (the coachman will also provide you guided tour) or on a bike (there are approx. 700 km of cycle routes in the Austrian metropole).
